May Magic: Celebrating Success and Growth

May is the fifth month of the year in the Gregorian and its predecessor, the Julian calendar. Named after the Greek goddess, Maia who is also identified Bona Dea (the Roman goddess of fertility), May is the time of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, May is a season of Autumn.

Originally the third month of the year, May later moved to the fifth month when January and February were added to the calendar. It contains 31 days.

Weather & Seasons

The fifth month is also the last month of Spring. Sоmе Nаtіvе Amеrісаn tribes called the Mау full moon Thе Full Flоwеr Mооn, The Cоrn Plаntіng Mооn or thе Mіlk Mооn.

Those born in may fall under either the Earth sign Taurus (the bull) or Gemini (the twins). Their birthstone is the beautiful emerald which comes in shades of green. The flower for May is the Lily of the Valley which represents purity, motherhood, humility, chastity and sweetness.

NATIONAL BARRIER AWARENESS DAY

On May 7 we are charged with breaking down obstacles on National Barrier Awareness Day.  We are responsible for dissolving stigmas that keep people with disabilities from advancing in education.  It’s an opportunity to tear down walls and build ramps that will help provide access.

Where there are misunderstandings, there is potential for the development of new technology that may bridge the gap.  Policies that are antiquated and are preventing those with disabilities from accessing their full potential can be re-assessed.  If there was ever a time to speak up about questionable treatment of a human being, National Barrier Awareness Day encourages us to do so now.

“Today some 36 million Americans suffer from some form of handicap. Eighty percent of Americans will experience some disability in their lifetime. That makes it necessary for all of us to understand and appreciate both the barriers they must surmount and the contributions that they can make to our society.

Many disabled people face financial, cultural, and physical barriers because of a lack of public understanding of their needs. We must become more aware of the barriers that prevent or inhibit so many of our fellow Americans from participating fully in the life of our society, and how much more they could contribute if those obstacles were removed….”

Visible and invisible barriers are equally difficult to overcome.  With advocacy, education and awareness these obstacles can be lifted, empowering people with disabilities to live more independent fulfilled lives.

There is a long way to go in giving access to everyone. I suffered an anyuerism stroke and spinal cord cyst about 7 years ago. This has limited where I can go and what I can do. The limitations are financial as well as physical. There are lots of innovative products out there but, losing my job and becoming disabled has prevented me from regular insurance options.

The only alternative is Medicare and most of the products are not covered. I had to buy my own lift to help me in and out of bed and into my wheelchair. There are great products out there that would go a long way toward regaining my walking ability.

Things we take for granted, myself included until it’s no longer possible. Public spaces like stores, restaurants, malls, boardwalks, beaches and even getting in and out of vehicles is a major challenge. Most of us have to make further sacrifices to venture there. I thought the worst part of being disabled was what you have already lost. That was wrong the worst is how much more you might have to sacrifice to participate in a full, active, independent life.

I am pleased to see the addition of beach mats. As I live just a few miles from some of Florida’s most beautiful beaches, they are no longer as inaccessible as the moon…

HISTORY

Proclamation 5472, signed by United States President Ronald Reagan, was released by the Office of the Press Secretary on May 8, 1986, declaring May 7 of 1986 as National Barrier Awareness Day. Since that day, many people across the country have continued to observe National Barrier Awareness Day each year on May 7.

NATIONAL ROAST LEG OF LAMB DAY

Each year on May 7th, National Roast Leg of Lamb Day makes a menu suggestion worthy of a celebration.  The leg of lamb is a mild and tender cut of meat that, when roasted, is a unique and tasty dish to many.  A typical preparation involves covering the leg of lamb with butter, rosemary sprigs pushed inside incisions cut in the leg, and rosemary leaves sprinkled on top. The lamb is then roasted for two hours at 360 degrees.

Lamb is a lean red meat loaded with nutrition. Of course, it’s going to deliver the protein at 25 grams per 3 ounce serving. But it also provides potassium and vitamin B-12. Another good reason to eat lamb is the iron, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Roasted or grilled vegetables pair well with roast leg of lamb. Consider asparagus, roast cauliflower, or tomatoes. Mix up a spring salad or for a touch of acid, a coleslaw. Rice complements lamb, too, as do mashed or baked potatoes. Add your favorite gravy or herb sauce. Finish the meal with a chocolate souffle or lemon tarts.

NATIONAL FOSTER CARE DAY

We are raising our voices on the first Tuesday in May to celebrate National Foster Care Day and encourage everyone to wear blue in support for foster youth in the U.S.

As we kick off Foster Care Month, we are providing the platform to help repair a system that is plagued with shortages nationwide. National Foster Care Day shines a badly needed light on the foster care system. There is a nationwide shortage of foster parents. In addition, stipends provided to foster care parents do no cover the essentials of a growing child.

Every 2 minutes, a new child is placed within the foster care system. Currently, there are over 400,000 children in the system at any given time. Many youth enter the foster care system with little to no belongings. Sadly, many of these kids have also suffered the effects of abuse, poverty, neglect, or even the death of their loved ones. The need for support services, essential items, and foster parents is high. Foster children have an uphill battle with startling statistics to overcome and need the support of our communities across the country.

Foster Care Statistics

  1. Around 250,00 children enter foster care each year.
  2. Only 50% of youth in foster care graduate high school.
  3. Foster children suffer PTSD at more than twice the rate of U.S. war veterans.
  4. One out of five foster children experience homelessness within 1 year of aging out of care.
  5. One-third of young women in foster care are pregnant or parenting by the age of 17 or 18.
  6. More than 70% of inmates incarcerated were in the foster care system at one point.
  7. Stipends do not cover the essentials of a growing child.

When you volunteer to become a court appointed special advocate or foster care parent you receive specialized training. You are not just providing a home for the child, you are a representative providing a safe haven for abused and neglected children.

Nationwide, there is a shortage of licensed foster homes. In the U.S. alone, more than 100,000 children waiting for a family to call home. Organizations like Ticket to Dream and Project Blue will help guide you on your journey to become a foster parent. Together, you will make a difference to help foster children heal and grow to their full potential.

NATIONAL FOSTER CARE DAY HISTORY

Ticket to Dream Foundation and the Project Blue, collaborated to create National Foster Care Day. This National Day aims to increase awareness surrounding the needs of children in foster care, the opportunities for volunteers, and the benefits of improving the system.

RAISE AWARENESS

  1. Volunteer for your local foster care nonprofit to raise funding.
  2. Open your home to a foster child by becoming a foster parent.
  3. Share this page to increase awareness and interest in the foster care system.
  4. Wear blue to show support for foster care youth.
  5. Share your stories about foster care using #FosterCareBlue on social media.

NATIONAL BEVERAGE DAY

National Beverage Day on May 6th encourages us to sit back, relax, and enjoy our favorite beverages.

Beverages come in many forms. And whether you prefer a hot beverage or a cold one, the choice is yours. Serve up a caffeinated drink poured over over ice. Make it carbonated or mix it up as a cocktail or a mocktail as the case may be. Beverages may be freshly squeezed, frozen, blended, or creamy. They can even be sweet, sour, bitter, smooth, or dry.

We drink them to cool off and to warm up. We also drink them to chill out and serve them to add sparkle to a celebration. Although, some months celebrate more than others. While January is quite busy and raises a glass to milk, green juice, and the bloody Mary, February only celebrates Kahlua. While July is busy, May doesn’t shy away from beverage celebrations, either. We just celebrated lemonade and America’s favorite beverage, orange juice, and will celebrate several more in May, too!

NATIONAL NURSES DAY

National Nurses Day is observed annually on May 6th. On this day, we raise awareness of all nurse contributions and commitments and acknowledge the vital role nurses play in society. This day is also the first day of National Nurses Week and is sometimes known as National RN Recognition Day.

National Nurses Week begins May 6th and ends on May 12th, which is the birthday of Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820 – August 13, 1910).  Florence Nightingale was a celebrated English, social reformer, statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She became well-known while taking care of the wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. Nightingale was dubbed The Lady with the Lamp because of her habit of making rounds at night.

NATIONAL NURSES DAY HISTORY

In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland, an employee at the United States Department of Health, sent a letter to President Eisenhower proposing a National Nurses Day. An official proclamation was not made. The following year people began celebrating National Nurses Week on their own.

In 1974, President Nixon proclaimed a National Nurse Week. New Mexico nurses initiated a resolution in 1981 to have May 6th declared National Recognition Day for Nurses. The American Nurses Association (ANA) Board of Directors took up the banner and promoted the proposal. In 1982, the United States Congress designated May 6th to be National Recognition Day for Nurses and President Ronald Reagan signed the proposal. The ANA Board of Directors later expanded the celebration in 1990 to a week-long celebration (May 6-12) known as National Nurses Week.

Each year the American Nurses Association (ANA) chooses a theme to acknowledge the many services provided by nurses everywhere during National Nurses Week.
